Interview preparation

Just like during the shortlisting phase, it is essential to prepare for the interview stage of the recruitment process. The following matters and the chosen approach to them should be decided in advance:

Panel composition:

The Bar Council’s Fair Recruitment Guide recommends an interview panel of three. This allows interviewers to bring varied perspectives on the applicant’s performance without becoming unwieldy and intimidating.[1] Any less than three may leave the process prone to bias.

Ahead of time, you should identify:

  • who they will be (bearing in mind the factors considered above in relation to the Recruitment Panel and Shortlisting Panel);
  • who will chair the interview; and
  • who will ask which question(s).

 As far as possible, this should be the same across all interviews.[1]
